We landed in Rome and promptly caught the train to Tivoli which lies north-east by some 30km (*I remembered early on that 'when in Rome' you don't really measure with the time=distance formula - a 30km trip could easily take 1.5 hours - which it did*).

Without getting too much into the history of Tivoli , you just need to know that it's very old (as is almost everything in Italy) and houses castle in the middle of town, an incredible waterfall, and the stunning Villa d'Este which is basically the most opulent garden estate you will ever visit. Beyond the attractions, I found much interest in the texture of the warm-toned buildings lining the narrow streets, the laundry on the lines, the modest shrines to Mary & Jesus, and the Villa Gregoriana park which is a park forged from a deep gorge at the base of a waterall.

Here's a few photos from our day there - More Italy to come!

Read more here

Big Old Italian Knockers

I’ve got more than a *few* photos from traveling over the past 2.5 weeks through Italy with my lovely fiancee – the turquoise sea, misty mountains, Roman ruins, splendid gardens, an abundance of flowers…and knockers. Big. Old. Italian. Knockers. Oh wait, you actually thought that I was going to post photos of…Really? Though I’m sure there’s another blog dedicated to THAT, what I’ve posted here are photos of the actual DOOR knockers. Italy is full of them, and I found them fascinating both for their age, design, and wear. I just imagined how many guests have used these while juggling bottles of wine, bread, and olives with children in tow, heading up to their cousin’s place for dinner. It also made me wonder (as most of these doors are entrances to multi-unit buildings) WHO would answer them when the knockers would be used? The tenant in apartment 1A must have had his rent subsidized by doubling as the building’s doorman (and probably superintendent).

So take a look at these – Something you don’t find so often in Canada anymore – Which one is your favorite?

Brittany and Ryan were married on a classic autumn (though rainy at times) day here in Ottawa. They had a lovely reveal at the eternal flame on Parliament Hill to the amusement of a bus-load of Asian tourists with whom I was directly competing for the title of ‘master of excessive camera gear’. The weather didn’t dampen spirits though – Brittany was one of the happiest looking brides I’ve ever seen, brimming ear-to-ear all day, despite being made to dive under an umbrella from time to time to avoid a cool downpour or letting the train of her dress serve as a leaf sweeper. Brittany, who also works for TOAST SPECIAL EVENTS, actually spent her engagement year making exactly one thousand paper birds which she strung over the guests’ seats at the ceremony at the MUSEUM OF NATURE. Thanks to both the bride and groom, their families, and my lovely girlfriend and assistant, Justyna, for making the day so smooth and enjoyable.

Read more here
